Nepal's Electoral Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Taking Place

In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These talks included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
